The MFL Department is committed to support your daughter's education during the Covid-19 outbreak. MFL teachers are setting up virtual lessons on Google Classroom so your daughter can continue doing class work and home learning from home. Your daughter will need to have a Google email account and click on the link below. She will then need to use the code her teachers have given her (a different code for each of her subjects). Teachers will be communicating with students through these virtual classrooms as well as sending all class work and home learning.

We hope you will find this useful. If your daughter doesn't have access to the Internet or has limited data, we have asked her to let us know so that we can provide her with these resources on hard copy.

We would like to encourage your daughter to check Google Classroom on a daily basis or at least on the days when she has Languages.

Additionally, your daughter has been given an ActiveLearn account where she will be able to complete some of the work. â€‹We strongly advise all students to continue learning languages using Apps such as Duolingo and Memrise (both have a free option).

MFL Department Intent

The purpose of MFL learning is not only to expose students to a foreign language and develop their language skills but also to foster a lifelong love for language learning, inspire a curiosity and respect for different cultures and enable students to be confident communicators. â€‹

¡Bienvenidos!                         Witajcie!                    Fàilte!                       Bemvindos         Benvenuti!                         Wilkommen!                                      Bienvenue!                       Welcome!

At Notre Dame, we are proud to have Languages playing an important role in the school. Last academic year we were congratulated by Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP, Minister of State for School Standards for being on the top 2% in the country for MFL entries (Please see letter HERE). Amongst our school community we speak many different languages and students in our department study French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Latin. Native speakers can also sit exams in Polish, Italian and Russian.

The MFL department is constantly refreshing their resources and we are currently writing new SoW for year 7 in line with research in cognitive science and second language acquisition to enhance the learning of our students and their memory rates.

The school has a 5-form entry.

All pupils entering the school will start the study of Spanish and either German or French (both languages alternate each year).  They will have 3 lessons per week for Spanish in years 7 and 9 and 2 lessons in Year 8. For German or French they will have 2 lessons per week in Years 7 and 9 and 3 lessons per week in year 8.
